Pasta Life Cycle
25 August 2012

In our Kindy class this term we have been learning about different life cycles. We started with the life cycle of a butterfly. Over 3 weeks we read lots of non-fiction books about the different stages of a butterflies life cycle. There are quite a few simple easy readers out there for early readers such as...

This is a really simple reader for Kindy kids!

And who can go past this time old classic?

In fact I love The Very Hungry Caterpillar story so much that it was the theme for my sons first birthday! It's such a bright and colourful story with a fantastic rhythmic story pattern.

After lots of reading, discussing, acting out and investigating the students completed a pasta life cycle. Each stage of the life cycle was represented by a different pasts type - risoni for the egg, spiral for the caterpillar, shell for the cocoon and bowtie for the butterfly.

The students glued the pasta onto 4 different leaves. They then had to order them correctly and share a fact about each stage which was scribed by an adult. More capable students could write this for themselves.

Make the Dino Sentence!
23 August 2012

In this game cut and laminate each of the cards. Separate the cards into groups with the same dinosaur picture. Students need to use their knowledge of sentence structure, text features and dinosaur facts to place the words in the sentence into the right order. Inlcuded is a recording sheet for students to write their sentence next to the picture of the corresponding dinosaur. There are 6 different dinosaur sentences.

A snapshot of me!
21 August 2012

As we begin to learn about life cycles in Kindy we first looked at our own life cycle (so far!)

The students discussed the ways they have changed since being a baby. The things they could and couldn't do as a baby, toddler and now as a Kindy Kid. We also discussed how they may change in the future.

The students then brought in 2 photos from home (1 of them as a baby, and 1 as a toddler) and we took a photo of them at school in their uniform. The students then glued the pre-cut camera on top of the photo and arranged the cameras in chronological order.

The students then chose things they could and couldn't do at each age, this was scribed for them by an adult. You can download your copy of the camera and baby/toddler/kid tags here.

This would also make a great back to school, getting to know you activity for the start of the new school year.

The students and parents all love looking at the photos and seeing how much the students have (or in some cases haven't!) changed.

The Terrible T-Rex
19 August 2012

We created this T-Rex craft using bubble wrap to give it an interesting effect!

Download the free T-Rex template from DLTK

My lovely EA assembled all of the body pieces onto one A3 piece of paper and traced around them in black texta before photocopying them onto green card (this helps the kids see the line to cut on once the black paint is added.) Students used bubble wrap with black paint to print over all the T-Rex body parts and painted the teeth white.

We used oil pastels to create a background for our T-Rex's on A3 card.

When the T-Rex is dry cut out the parts and students can assemble them onto their background. The bubble print effect really stands out!
