Rockin' around the Christmas Tree!
29 November 2012

My Pre- Primary class had so much fun putting up our Christmas tree while listening to Christmas carols! I teach in a very culturally diverse area and for many students they don't put up a Christmas tree at home, so it was even more special and exciting!

As we put up our Christmas we talked about the different things were were doing and putting on it. We tried to use language other than the word 'put' when describing what we were doing.

After we put up the Christmas tree we wrote a procedure using our 'How to decorate a Christmas tree' template

Poor Old Rudolph!
20 November 2012

I only have 7 days left my with little kindy kids before we have our Christmas concert. We have been practising 2 songs (with actions) to perform - Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. For some of the students this is the first time they have learnt the words to the songs so we went through them line by line. When we got to the part in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer that says "all of the other reindeer wouldn't let him join in any reindeer games" the kindy kids were mad! How rude! That is definitely not being a good friend! And of course, KIndy kids being Kindy kids, brought this up every time we sang the song. Every. Time.

That was the main reason behind the creation of the activity 'Poor old rudolph'

Some of the responses were so hilarious - Dob to Santa, Play with the baby reindeer. To create the little Rudolph face we simply printed the students hands in brown paint and sprinkled it with glitter. The nose is a little red glitter pom-pom. Too cute!

On a side note I am so impressed with how fab some of my students writing has become! It is so encouraging to see the hard work pay off and have everything "click" into place for them.

Have you started following us on our Facebook page and TPT store? We would love it if you could help spread the word about this little project of ours, it would mean the world to us!

It's in the Bag!!
18 November 2012

The students in my class were finding partioning numbers a tad difficult so I was relieved when I came across this awesome idea!!! All you need are counters and a ziplock bag with a line drawn down the middle.

In the bag place the desired nubmer of counters and students are able to move the counters in the bag and manipulate the number on each side of the bag to create number sentences.File 4628

My students enjoyed finding all of the different ways to make a number and creating them in their bags. It really provided them with a hands on visual way to understanding partioning.

We were writing our answers onto mini whiteboards. I was helping them at the start by telling them how many different ways the nubmer could be made, but next time I do this I will not be telling them!

They loved having races to see who could be the first to find all of the ways to make a number.

The first time we did this I only focused on small nubmers to 5, but they are definitely ready to begin using higher numbers.

Check back soon I as I will be uploading a recording sheet for this activity!
