To help introduce my students to the letters of the alphabet we read the book 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom' by Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault. This story is about the letters(lower case) of the alphabet going up the coconut tree in the correct order. The letters then all fall down and their parents(upper case) come to pick the letters up.

After reading the story we watched the 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom' song on the interactive whiteboard. This was a big hit!

They enjoyed joining in the story and discussing the letters. So many different activities can come from this book, but our favourite was making our own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom trees with our names going up the tree.

First we painted the student's forearm brown and pressed it onto the paper. Next we painted both hand green and pressed them down for the leaves. Students then used foam alphabet stickers to create their names going up the tree. While completing the activity students were asked if they knew any of the letters in their name and how many letters were in it. They loved their own Chick Chicka Boom Boom trees and finding their friend's trees! File 2034

Remember keep calm and pretend it's on the lesson plan.
