Rollin', Rollin', Rollin'!

Play this 'roll a cvc word' game with your students!

It helps them practise blending 3 letter words and decide if it is a real word or not.

I printed and laminated 6 of the gameboards for students to use during literacy rotations.

Download the gameboards here

To play this game students will roll a dice and move down that many places. Repeat this for each column of letters. Students will then put the letters together and decide if they have rolled a real or made up word.

If it is a real word they get to write it on their mini whiteboard.

Students love to compete against each other and try and write the most words!

(Nothing motivates my class more than a bit of friendly competition!)

Syl - la - bles ~ update!
1 June 2012

Regular readers of our blog would know that this term in Kindergarten we are focusing on blending and segmenting words into syllables. If you missed the first blog post about it you can read it here.

I just wanted to share this photo with you and show you a different way of using our syllable house resource. Instead of using this resource as a small group game I used it as a quick review activity for the whole class prior to completing the syllable assessment. To play each child was given one of the game cards, we then went around the circle and each student got to say their segmented word (e.g. doc - tor) the rest of the class had to listen and guess before seeing the picture. We then counted the number of syllables in the word and the card was placed into the correct house.

Remember keep calm and pretend it's on the lesson plan!
