Getting to know Goldilocks!
19 May 2013

Last week we started our Fairytales theme and our first story was Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

We wrote apology letters to the Three Bears from Goldilocks. We talked about the things Goldilocks did and ways she could make it up to the Three Bears. I used a template with big lines for my Pre-Primaries and small lines for my Year Ones.

To go with our writing we created a character from the story. We used a paper plate to create them and the kids got to decorate them with paint, bows, googly eyes, yellow ribbon and textas. They look super cute!

After reading the story every day for a week we completed story retells.

This retell sheet was used by my Year Ones to retell the story. There are pictures down the side to help students rememeber key parts of the story.

With my Pre-Primary students I had them only complete an oral retell which was scibed for them. They also got to use the pictures to help them.

We made porridge just like the Three Bears. I used this sheet with my Year Ones to write a procedure on how to make porridge. This sheet says 'this is how we made our porridge'

My Pre-Primaries had a go at writing the ingredients that went into the porridge. This sheet says 'this is what we used to mkae our porridge'

We used

  • 1 cup of oats
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • a pinch of salt
  • a dessert spoon on sugar
  • maple syrup

This was mounted onto card with a photo of them eating their porridge.

Afterwards we made a bar graph showing who liked and disliked the porridge.

We talked about what might happen if Goldilocks came to our classroom. Was she going to be good or naughty?

I used a template with big lines for my Pre's and a template with line lines for my 1's.

Included is also a cover page for the class book if you want to make one!

Run with It!
23 October 2012

Sometimes it can be hard keeping on top of your running record data and using the information effectively! I try to be super organised with my 'Guided Reading File' and we have created a couple of documents to help you keep your running record assessments in order! We have found these documents help us to monitor our students progress and make our guided reading groups.

File 4450

Use this sheet to make notes during Guided Reading.

Write the name of the group at the top and there are grids for two guided reading sessions - just add the date to each one.

This template makes it easy for the teacher to record the book level, title and strategy they are teaching.

Underneath is a grid to write notes/observations about each child during the session.

Use this template to track individual students progress over the year. One side has a column to write in the date, the book and level, and also the students accuracy each time you complete a running record. I like to only write in when the student gets over 90% accuracy and is ready to move onto the next level.

The other side has a line graph to fill in their progress. Write the months along the bottom where the dashes are and place a dot on their current level at the end of each month. Join the dots up to make the line graph. It is good to see their progress on the graph; to see when they are making great progress or when are stuck at a level for a month or two and they need to be taken a closer look at.

Use this template to track your whole class' running record progress.

I like to enlarge this sheet to A3 to allow more room to write.

Write your students name down the side and each time they complete a level, place the date in the corresponding box. I like to colour code mine so it is clear to see students progress each term and it also helps to place students into guided reading groups.

Find all of these documents under Reading - Guided Reading

I have all of the documents in the assessment section of my guided reading file and keep it with me when doing guided reading and running records.

We will have more information and documents from our guided reading files soon!
