New Chemical Sciences Unit Plans: Best Practice & Best Tips!

Our brand new Chemical Sciences unit plans have just dropped for Foundation to Year 6! 🎉

Handcrafted by our incredible resource creator team, these comprehensive packages are made by teachers, for teachers. Featuring everything you need to plan, teach and assess Chemical Sciences against the V9 Australian Curriculum, your Term 4 planning has never been easier 💛

In this handy guide, you’ll find all the details on what each package contains, what you’ll need to get started and our favourite ideas for how to get the most out of each unit. Are you ready? Let’s get started!

Our unit plans are full of everything you need to craft an incredible series of learning experiences for your students! 🙌🏼 Let’s break down exactly what you’ll find in each package!

💛 Unit Guide: This detailed PDF document includes an overview of the unit, a curriculum-aligned scope and sequence, and all required lesson plans, experiments, worksheets, assessments and rubrics. Your lesson plans detail each step of the lesson in order, offer opportunities for differentiation and also include guides for required and optional resources to include. These plans are designed with flexibility in mind, so feel free to shorten or lengthen your lessons as needed!

💛 Display Package: This optional pack contains a banner, posters and a word wall aligned with the unit’s content. The word wall uses colour coordination to sort vocabulary into three tiers of difficulty, and also includes blank cards for you or your students to add more vocabulary words as you discover them throughout the unit.

💛 PowerPoints: Use the included presentations to bolster student learning. Each PowerPoint is unique and may contain key content, games, activities and more!

Let’s check out what each year level’s Chemical Sciences unit plan is all about! ⭐️

As the V9 Australian Curriculum only covers three Science sub-strands each for Foundation to Year 2, there is no Chemical Sciences unit plan for Year 1. Be sure to check out the Year 1 unit plans for Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences instead!

💛 Foundation: Investigating Materials 💛

Over the course of five lessons, students will learn to recognise and identify the materials used to make objects and tools in their everyday lives. They will observe the properties of different materials by using their senses. Students will learn about traditional ways to combine materials to make objects and tools for different purposes. They use this knowledge to investigate the best material to weave a basket. To conclude the unit, students will apply their scientific knowledge to design and make a pair of shoes for a specific purpose.

💛 Year Two: Manipulating Materials 💛

In this 8-lesson inquiry-based unit, students will focus on recognising that materials can be changed physically without changing their material composition. They will explore the effects of different actions on materials, including bending, twisting, stretching and breaking into smaller pieces.

This plan includes a hands-on activity in every lesson as well as two assessment opportunities!

💛 Year Three: Melting & Freezing 💛

This unit exploresthe properties of solids and liquids and how applying or removing heat leads to a change of state over the course of 8 lessons. Students will experience hands-on observations, planning and conducting experiments and using the melting properties or recyclable materials to create a new object. Two assessments are included in your package, as well as three separate PowerPoint presentations!

This plan includes a hands-on activity in every lesson as well as two assessment opportunities!

💛 Year Four: Properties of Materials 💛

This 8-lesson unit explores the differences between natural and made materials and how properties impact how they are used. Students will investigate properties of elasticity in a guided hands-on experiment before crafting their own to determine which material would be best to create a tent. The unit culminates with students designing a new reusable product that intends to replace a single-use item that is used today.

Includes two assessments with links to the Design & Technology curriculum and three PowerPoint presentations.

💛 Year Five: States of Matter 💛

The inquiry-based unit focuses on hands-on experiences to help your students learn about solids, liquids and gases. They will begin by enjoying a cup of hot chocolate and considering the science behind marshmallows melting. Other engaging activities along the way include extracting oil from olives and releasing a gummy lolly trapped in an ice cube.

Two investigations and two assessment opportunities are provided within this 8-lesson unit.

💛 Year Six: Reversible & Irreversible Changes 💛

Welcome to the Carnival of Chemistry! This 8-lesson inquiry-based unit focuses on hands-on experiences. The lessons are carnival-themed and explore dissolving, burning and evaporation through visits to the food truck and drinks stall as well as helping the fire dancer and investigating fireworks. A range of engaging experiments and activities will be completed throughout the unit, such as dissolving confectionery, preparing pizza dough and making lemonade.

After completing the two assessment tasks, students conclude by organising a science fair which you could even invite parents, carers and other classes to attend!

💛 Check for Supplies: Many of the hands-on experiments and activities may require access to additional supplies. We have endeavoured to ensure these supplies are as cheap and easy for you to obtain as possible 🙌🏼 You’ll find the required items listed on each relevant lesson plan.

💛 Plan Ahead: Make sure to read the entirety of the unit guide before starting your first lesson. It’s much easier to plan your teaching and learning when you have an idea of what will be happening next!

💛 Use Individual Resources: Many of the individual tasks in our Chemical Sciences unit plans are available on the webby as individual downloads. This is perfect for when you need a quick worksheet, experiment or assessment. Find all our individual Chemical Science resources here!

We hope you have fun exploring Chemical Sciences with your students! Only one more Science strand left 👀
