Description

2D Shape Race is a hands-on and engaging game that encourages students to practise their shape identification while strengthening fine motor skills in a fun, low-prep format. Combining early geometry concepts with purposeful tracing tasks, this game supports both mathematical understanding and foundational handwriting development.

Designed for individuals or small groups, students take turns rolling a die and moving around the game board. When they land on a shape, they must name it and trace it on their recording sheet. The first player to trace all shapes—or the one with the most shapes traced when the timer ends—wins. This format builds friendly competition while reinforcing essential skills like shape recognition, pencil control, and grip.

This resource includes both high and low colour versions for easy printing, and the game boards can be reused when printed on thick card or laminated. Whether used as part of maths centres, early finisher activities, or independent practise, 2D Shape Race brings together play and learning in one purposeful package.

  • • Continue until all shapes are traced or time is up
  • • Player with the most shapes traced (or all completed) wins

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Include in your maths rotations for shape recognition and pencil control practise
  • 💡 Use during fine motor skills sessions or handwriting prep groups
  • 💡 Set up as a partner challenge station where students check each other’s tracing
  • 💡 Laminate recording sheets and use dry-erase markers for repeated use
  • 💡 Create a class leaderboard to encourage engagement over time
