Description

If you’re looking for a fun and engaging way to explore 2D shapes with your students, then the 2D Shape Robot Craft is exactly what you need. This hands-on activity allows students to use their creativity while applying their shape knowledge in a meaningful and enjoyable way.

Using a collection of squares, circles, rectangles, and triangles in various sizes, students can design their own 2D Shape Robot. Whether it's symmetrical, abstract, or wonderfully wacky, the design possibilities are endless—making this task perfect for all learning levels and artistic abilities.

Check out this video below to see this resource in action.

Shapes can be printed in full colour, black and white onto coloured paper, or simply black and white for students to colour themselves. After students have completed their robot, they can fill out a recording slip describing the types and numbers of 2D shapes used. Multiple recording slip versions are included to cater for different age groups and ability levels.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Identify and name common 2D shapes
  • ✅ Use 2D shapes to create an object with visual structure
  • ✅ Record and communicate shape knowledge through writing and drawing
  • ✅ Develop fine motor and design skills through cutting, arranging, and pasting

What’s Included:

  • Printable 2D shape sets in various sizes
  • Black and white, colour, and outline-only shape versions
  • Recording slips in multiple differentiated formats
  • “2D Shape Robot” display banner
  • Tips and optional extension suggestions for easy implementation

Materials Needed:

  • Ribbon, tape, or display space for finished robots

How to Use:

  • • Print the desired version of the shape sheets for your students
  • • Students choose and assemble shapes to create their robot on a blank sheet
  • • Complete the recording slip to describe the shapes used and their quantities
  • • Display finished robots under the included classroom banner

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use as a follow-up to a 2D shape lesson or small group activity
  • 💡 Pair with shape posters for support during the design phase
  • 💡 Display robots on a bulletin board with students' shape recording slips
  • 💡 Allow students to present their robot and explain which shapes they used and why
  • 💡 Turn the activity into a maths/art integration by adding symmetry or measurement components

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Print the shape sets in both A4 and A3 to offer a variety of sizes and design options
  • 💛 Pre-slice the printed shape sheets into strips for easier and faster cutting
  • 💛 Encourage students to include a set number of each shape type to increase challenge
  • 💛 Use completed robots for formative assessment on shape recognition and classification
  • 💛 Create a gallery walk and have students vote on creative or shape-rich designs

2D Shape Robot Craft is a hands-on and creative way to reinforce 2D shape understanding while producing a colourful and fun classroom display your students will be proud of.
