If you’re looking for a hands-on way for your students to develop or consolidate their understanding of real-world 2D shape examples, then this is the activity for you!

2D Shapes Sort requires students to sort a series of picture task cards that depict real-world examples of 2D shapes. With eight different 2D shapes included (circles, diamonds, ovals, rectangles, squares, triangles, pentagons and hexagons), 2D Shapes Sort will demonstrate how prolific 2D shapes are in our environment.

2D Shapes Sort comes in two versions, allowing you to choose between full colour or low colour to suit your printing needs. It is recommended to print your task cards on cardstock. The task cards will need to be cut out as part of your lesson preparation. Recording sheet options have also been included!

The 2D Shapes Sort can be completed individually or in small groups. It can even be completed as a whole class challenge with the cards spread around the room and students needing to work together to get the cards to the correct locations – an additional challenge could be doing this without talking.

2D Shapes Sort could be followed up with the 2D Shapes Scavenger Hunt, as students will have been exposed to real-world examples of each 2D shape.
