Description

This interactive activity fosters meaningful conversations about First Nations perspectives and introduces students to common visual symbols used in traditional storytelling and art. Display the symbol cards around the classroom or outdoor space for students to find and record on the included worksheet.

How to Use

  1. Print and cut out the symbol cards and display them around your classroom or learning space (choose from high colour, low colour or black and white).
  2. Give each student a recording sheet, pencil and clipboard.
  3. Students will explore the space to find the First Nations symbol cards. As they find each one, they will record the name and meaning of the symbol on their worksheet.
  4. Once complete, students can share their findings or use the vocabulary in a related writing or art activity.

Additional Tips

  1. Print the cards on thick cardstock for longevity.
  2. Use the cards as flashcards to introduce or reinforce vocabulary.
  3. Have students choose a few symbols to include in their own storytelling artwork.
  4. Invite students to write a sentence or story using at least five symbols from the activity.
  5. Discuss where these symbols come from, what they mean and how First Nations peoples use them to share knowledge.

The images used in this resource were created as part of a commissioned art project for Top Teacher by Ryhia Dank from Nardurna. Ryhia also created the artwork that formed our Juguli Décor Pack.

This activity promotes cultural understanding, language development and curiosity - all while getting students up and moving! It's perfect for Reconciliation Week, NAIDOC celebrations or exploring First Nations perspectives.
