Description

Like a word search - but with numbers! Addition Equation Search is a fun and focused way for students to practise their addition facts while engaging in a visual and strategic puzzle. This activity supports fluency with addition while encouraging accuracy, scanning skills, and self-checking. Perfect for reinforcing number facts to 20 in a hands-on, student-friendly format.

Students begin by solving twelve given addition equations. After calculating the sum, they locate the addends and answer as a connected group of three numbers in the number grid. These number sets can be found either horizontally (right to left) or vertically (top to bottom). If a student has incorrectly added an equation, they will not be able to find the matching string of numbers, making this an excellent self-correcting task that builds attention to detail and accuracy.

With six different puzzle versions included, you’ll have plenty of options for differentiation, repetition, and student choice. Use this resource as a warm-up, fast finisher activity, small group station, or part of your weekly numeracy rotations. Print on paper or use in write and wipe sleeves to increase reusability and keep your students coming back for more engaging maths fun!

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Solve addition equations accurately and efficiently
  • ✅ Identify number patterns and relationships within a grid
  • ✅ Develop mental maths fluency with addition facts to 20

  • Write and wipe sleeves and whiteboard markers (optional for reusability)

How to Use:

  1. Students solve each of the 12 addition equations listed on the worksheet.
  2. They then search the grid to find the matching three-number sequence - two addends and their sum.
  3. Students highlight or colour the numbers once found, checking that the order matches the equation.
  4. If a match cannot be found, students revisit their equation to rework their answer.
  5. Continue until all 12 equations have been found in the puzzle.

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use as a warm-up during maths lessons to reinforce fluency
  • 💡 Include in your early finisher tub for a self-directed challenge

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Model one or two examples as a class before releasing students independently
  • 💛 Provide manipulatives or number lines for students who need support solving the sums
  • 💛 Encourage students to verbalise the equation as they scan for it in the grid
  • 💛 Use a timer to add an optional challenge element to the activity

Addition Equation Search is a fun and motivating resource that strengthens number fact fluency through visual play and strategy. Whether used individually, in pairs, or as part of a rotation, it’s a low-prep way to bring energy and problem-solving into your addition practice.
