Description

The My Mastery File: Alphabet, Phonics & Sight Words activity is a comprehensive, editable resource designed to support early learners in mastering their alphabet knowledge, phonics sounds, and sight words. Use this folder to provide a structured approach to tracking and practising key literacy skills, making it perfect for home or classroom use. The resource includes both colour and black-and-white versions to suit different teaching needs and preferences. Editable sound and sight word flashcards are included, allowing teachers to customise the resource for individual students.

How to Complete

  1. Print the cover page, insert pages and flashcards. The cards are editable, meaning you can enter your preferred fonts and words.
  2. To create the My Mastery File folder, glue the cover page to the front of a manila folder or a piece of folded A3 card.
  3. Inside the folder, glue the ‘These are the…’ sound or word pages. Use one side for sounds or words being learnt, and the other side for those that have been mastered.
  4. In addition, we have included pages with ideas for how parents can help their child practise the letter sounds and sight words at home. If making this resource into a folder, this page can be stuck to the back.

Additional Tips

  1. Tape zip lock bags to the inside of the folder as a great way to store the flashcards.
  2. Share the practise sheets and activities with parents and carers early in the school year to encourage nightly revision and at-home learning.

Extension Ideas:

  1. Word Building Challenges: Challenge students to create words using their mastered sounds. This can be a fun group activity or individual task.
  2. Sentence Creation: Encourage student to use their sight words in sentences. They can write or verbally share their sentences with peers or teachers.
  3. Sound Art Projects: Use the black-and-white version of the flashcards for creative tasks like making sound collages or decorating a ‘Sound Wall’ in the classroom.
  4. Game-Based Learning: Combine mastered sounds and sight words into larger games like game boards or scavenger hunts for collaborative learning.

Our My Mastery File resource is an invaluable tool for any educator looking to make learning the alphabet, phonics, and sight words an enjoyable and highly personalised experience for students.
