Description

Students correctly answer questions to reach the top of the mountain. With each correct response, they hike higher and witness the scenery shift from lowland forests to icy peaks. How far will they make it? At the end of the journey, a photo-style polaroid captures their progress with a final score to celebrate their achievement!

This version focuses on balanced equations involving addition and subtraction to 10. Students are presented with number sentences that include a missing value and must determine the unknown to make both sides of the equation equal. These algebraic thinking tasks help students build a deep understanding of number relationships and operations.

The game can be played solo or cooperatively. If played in teams, students must work together to solve each equation and support each other’s reasoning. The goal? Reach the summit by answering every question correctly—and if not, they can try again to climb higher next time!

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Solve balanced equations involving addition and subtraction to 10
  • ✅ Identify unknown values in number sentences using algebraic thinking
  • ✅ Strengthen understanding of number relationships and equivalence
  • ✅ Develop reasoning skills and mathematical vocabulary
  • ✅ Engage in a cooperative, goal-focused maths game

How to Play:

  1. Students are presented with balanced equations missing one value (e.g. 3 + __ = 5 + 1).
  2. They choose the correct number to make both sides equal.
  3. Each correct answer moves them higher up the mountain trail.
  4. If playing with others, students collaborate to solve the questions as a team.
  5. When all questions are answered, a photo-style summary shows how far they climbed.

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use during your algebra or equations unit in Years 3–5
  • 💡 Play individually for fluency practice or as a team to encourage collaborative problem solving
  • 💡 Include in maths rotations or as an engaging early finisher option
  • 💡 Encourage students to explain how they solved each equation as a reflection task

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
  • 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired, or group play
  • 💛 Send the QR code home for students to play as a homework or revision task

Let’s Hike – Balanced Equations: Addition & Subtraction Equations to 10 builds algebraic thinking and teamwork in a visually rewarding and motivating format that encourages students to persevere and reach the top!
