To play the game, students will turn the simple sentences from the Battle of the Clauses game cards into complex sentences through the addition of an embedded clause. Each card includes a picture clue that will help them to describe the underlined noun and an arrow that indicates where the embedded clause should go. Students can also refer to the Relative Pronoun Reference Cards which remind them how to begin their embedded clauses. The Battle of the Clauses Recording Sheet is a wonderful way to document your students’ understanding of the topic; however, if you wish to save paper, they can use whiteboards to record their sentences.

This resource includes everything you need to play the game: simple instructions, 32 eye-catching game cards, handy relative pronoun reference cards and a recording sheet. Colour and black-and-white versions of the game cards have been included. For best results, print the Battle of the Clauses game cards onto thick A4 cardstock, cut along the dotted lines and your students will be ready to play! To save ink, we recommend printing the black-and-white document on coloured paper.
