Make learning high frequency words exciting with our Easter-themed Beat the Bunny game! This interactive group activity helps students practise recognising and reading high frequency words while working together to ‘beat’ the bunny. The goal is for students to cover all words on their board before the bunny picture is completely revealed.

How to Complete

1. Print the Beat the Bunny picture board, word game boards, picture cards and word cards on thick cardstock for durability. Cut out the picture and word cards ready for play. Please note that we have included an editable version where you can enter your own sets of words!
2. Shuffle the picture and word cards into a single pile. Ensure each student has access to their own game board.
3. Students will take turns drawing a card from the pile and reading it aloud. If a student’s game board contains that word, they place the card on their board. If no-one has the word, it goes into a discard pile. If a bunny picture card is drawn, it is placed on the bunny picture board.
4. Students win the game if they cover all their words before the bunny picture is completely revealed!

Additional Tips

1. Play multiple rounds to allow students to practise a variety of high frequency words.
2. Encourage students to say words aloud to reinforce word recognition.

Extension Ideas

1. Sentence Builder: Have students use the high frequency words in a sentence before placing the card on their board.
2. Partner Play: Students can work in pairs to practise reading the words to each other.
3. Personalised Spelling: Use the editable templates to create word lists based on your students’ current spelling focus!
