Description

Encourage creativity, storytelling, and reflection with our Book Week 2025: My Adventure Backpack! This interactive and imaginative craft is perfect for celebrating this year’s Book Week theme – Book an Adventure. Through writing and craft, students reflect on their favourite story adventures while developing key literacy skills in sequencing, comprehension, and retelling.

Students will colour, decorate, and assemble their own adventure backpack craft that ‘unzips’ to reveal a personal writing piece about a favourite book or story moment. With a variety of writing line options and a flap-style design, this activity can be easily adapted to suit students across Foundation to Year 3. It’s perfect for encouraging thoughtful reading responses in a creative and engaging format.

Once completed, the backpacks make a vibrant classroom display, especially when paired with the Book Week 2025 Book an Adventure banner. It’s an ideal way to combine literacy, art, and celebration into one meaningful activity that showcases each child’s reading journey.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Develop comprehension and sequencing skills through written reflection
  • ✅ Practise retelling and summarising story elements in a structured format
  • ✅ Engage in hands-on craft to support creativity and fine motor development
  • ✅ Express personal reading experiences and preferences
  • ✅ Celebrate the joy of books and storytelling during Book Week

What’s Included:

  • Adventure backpack template (ideal for white or coloured card)
  • Multiple writing line options (blank, 24mm, 18mm, 14mm) to suit different year levels
  • Detailed folding and assembly instructions for a flap-style reveal
  • Optional: coordinating display banner (see Book Week 2025 Display Pack)

Materials Needed:

  • Printed backpack templates and writing pages

  • Glue, scissors, and A3 backing paper (optional for display)
  • Optional: craft materials like pom poms, stickers, fabric, glitter, or feathers

How to Use:

  1. Print the backpack template and select a writing line option based on student needs.
  2. Have students decorate the backpack using colouring tools and craft materials.
  3. Students complete the writing page with a description or drawing of their favourite story adventure.
  4. Fold the writing page in half, and glue the backpack halves to either side, creating a flap that opens to reveal the writing.
  5. Display finished backpacks on a classroom wall with the Book Week banner for a cohesive themed display.

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use as a writing centre activity during Book Week rotations
  • 💡 Pair with a shared class text and have students each choose a different adventure moment
  • 💡 Incorporate into an author study – students can choose a favourite book from a featured author
  • 💡 Invite students to present their backpacks and share their favourite story in front of the class
  • 💡 Use as an engaging reflection task following your Book Week Parade or reading challenge

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Enlarge templates to A3 for easier writing and cutting for younger students
  • 💛 Use sentence starters for reluctant writers (e.g. “My favourite story adventure is when…”)
  • 💛 Print on white card for durability and stronger folding structure
  • 💛 Display completed crafts on bulletin boards or along classroom windows for a colourful reading wall

Our My Adventure Backpack is a fantastic way to engage students in personal reflection while bringing Book Week 2025 to life. With its creative format and meaningful content, this resource helps students connect with books, express their ideas, and showcase their love of reading in a fun and memorable way.

Display your backpacks alongside the Book Week 2025: Book an Adventure Display Pack for a stunning classroom celebration of storytelling and imagination.
