Description

Roll the dice and move around the game board, which features mini worlds taken from the other digi-games. From deserts to oceans and mountain paths, each space is a chance to earn points and show off your maths skills. The more correct answers you get, the more treasure you collect. Game on!

In this version, students practise calculating the area of various shapes by counting the number of coloured unit squares. This visual and engaging method helps students build a strong understanding of area as a measurable attribute while developing spatial awareness and early multiplication concepts.

Let’s Roll – Calculate Area by Counting Squares is ideal for Year 2–4 students learning about area in a fun and interactive way. It’s perfect for classroom rotations, fluency warm-ups, or independent revision using the QR code.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Understand area as the number of unit squares covering a shape
  • ✅ Count squares to calculate area accurately
  • ✅ Build fluency in early measurement and spatial reasoning
  • ✅ Develop understanding of regular and irregular shapes
  • ✅ Engage in interactive, turn-based gameplay to reinforce maths concepts

How to Play:

  1. Students roll the dice and move their token across the themed game board.
  2. When they land on a space, they’re shown a shape made of coloured squares and asked to calculate its area.
  3. A correct answer earns coins—different colours and sizes represent different point values.
  4. Occasionally, a special event may appear to add excitement to the round.
  5. The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins!

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use during your measurement unit to support students learning about area
  • 💡 Great for Year 2–4 students consolidating their understanding of square units
  • 💡 Pair with a hands-on task involving grid paper or shape tiling activities
