Captain Compound is an engaging and hands-on activity that will challenge students to put compound sentences together using an appropriate conjunction.

Using an engaging theme and clipart, Captain Compound challenges students to sort through sentence strips to pair the correct clauses together, and, with the addition of a conjunction, create a correct compound sentence. With 28 sentences included, students will need to use their detective skills to become Captain Compound and heroically form the sentences.

Captain Compound comes in both high and low colour. The Sentence Strips and Conjunction Cards must be cut before students use the activity; however, once this activity is prepared once, it can be used time and time again. We recommend printing the Sentence Mat, Sentence Strips and Conjunction Cards on thick card to ensure longevity. Velcro could be used on the back of the Sentence Strips and Conjunction Cards, allowing students to attach their answers to the Sentence Mat, although this is optional.

A recording sheet is included, providing the opportunity for students to record the sentences they create. The Sentence Strips are numbered, and space is provided on the recording sheet to include the numbers. There is space to record four sentences on each recording sheet, so depending on the number of sentences you would like your students to record multiple recording sheets will need to be available. Alternatively, students could record their sentences in their work book. A set of suggested answers is also included, making teacher or student-led correction a breeze.
