Captain Comprehension: Whales is a series of three worksheets that will challenge students to consider the purpose of a text and how information about a topic can be presented in different ways.

Students will read three text type passages about whales and answer the corresponding comprehension questions. Students must consider the different text types used and how they convey information. After completing all three worksheets, a class discussion could be facilitated to investigate how different texts convey information and analyse whether there are any similarities between them.

Captain Comprehension: Whales poses questions that require students to think beyond the words on the page. Going beyond a typical comprehension activity, this task requires students to think about the purpose of the text and why a particular text type was used. Students could be challenged to consider whether a different text type would have been a better option.
