Description

Race around the track in this fast-paced game. Watch as your car zooms ahead with every correct answer, leaving the competition behind! As students answer questions, they speed through colourful race environments—who will reach the finish line first and earn a spot on the winner’s podium?

In this version, students will choose the character that best matches the suggested setting. Whether it’s deciding who lives in a beanstalk or who belongs in a haunted house, this activity supports comprehension, storytelling, and logical thinking by helping students make connections between characters and their environments.

Let’s Race – Characters & Settings is a fun and effective way to reinforce narrative structure. Use it during literacy lessons, small-group discussions, or as an independent warm-up using the QR code. It’s perfect for adding movement and excitement to any reading block.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Match characters to appropriate narrative settings
  • ✅ Develop understanding of story structure and world-building
  • ✅ Practise logical reasoning and prediction skills
  • ✅ Strengthen comprehension through visual cues and scenario-based questions
  • ✅ Engage with literacy content in a fast-paced, competitive format

How to Play:

  1. Students roll the dice and move their car along the race track.
  2. When they land on a space, they answer a multiple choice question about which character fits a given setting.
  3. A correct answer speeds up their car, helping them race ahead.
  4. An incorrect answer slows them down, giving other players a chance to catch up.
  5. The race continues until all questions are answered. The player with the fastest time and most points wins!

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use during narrative writing or reading comprehension lessons
  • 💡 Great for Year 2–4 students learning to link characters and settings
  • 💡 Add to literacy rotations or as a fun Friday review activity
  • 💡 Follow up with a story-planning task where students invent their own characters and settings

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
  • 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired, or group play
  • 💛 Send the QR code home for students to play as a homework or revision task

Let’s Race – Characters & Settings helps students make meaningful narrative connections while racing to the finish line in a fun, fast-paced literacy game!
