Charlotte’s Web: Descriptions Using Smell Book Response Task
Description
Your students can investigate E. B. White’s use of the sense of smell when describing scenes in Charlotte’s Web with this task.
After finding examples of descriptions using the sense of smell in the book and considering why the author chose to use them, your students will embark on a smelling scavenger hunt in the classroom or around the school. They will find different items and make notes about their smells. Your students will then write their own descriptions of the items using the sense of smell.
Their descriptions will be written on cards to create a fun whole-class game. You can randomly select cards and read them out for the rest of the class to guess the item that was being described. This task could be completed after reading chapter three, so you could read out a couple of cards each day throughout the remainder of your book unit.
As an optional extra, your students could create a scoring system for the game. For example, the lowest number of guesses needed to find the item that was being described is the winner.
When printing these worksheets, ensure that they are single sided so that the cards at the bottom of the second page can be cut out.
