Students will embark on a series of hands-on, engaging and educational lessons in this Year 2 Chemical Sciences unit, Manipulating Materials. This 8-lesson inquiry-based unit focuses on recognising that materials can be changed physically without changing their material composition and exploring the effect of different actions on materials including bending, twisting, stretching and breaking into smaller pieces (AC9S2U03).

Starting with a look at different materials before moving to how they can be manipulated, students will work with a range of materials and consider the various ways they can be manipulated over the 8 lessons. With a hands-on component in every lesson, students will have ample opportunities to test their predictions and make meaningful observations.

With two assessment tasks included, confidently assessing student levels of understanding will be a breeze. Both assessment tasks include a comprehensive rubric, with all appropriate curriculum codes assessed at some point during the unit.
