Your students can discover the observable properties of the states of matter and model the motion and arrangement of their particles with this engaging Year 5 Chemical Sciences unit.

The inquiry-based unit focuses on hands-on experiences to help your students learn about solids, liquids and gases. They will begin by enjoying a cup of hot chocolate and considering the science behind marshmallows melting.

Your students will complete two fun investigations. The first will support them to learn and use the science inquiry skills by investigating ice melting with different substances. The second will see them applying their skills to independently complete an ice cream investigation for assessment. A comprehensive marking rubric is provided.

Other engaging activities along the way include extracting oil from olives and releasing a gummy lolly trapped in an ice cube. When your students reach the end of the unit, they will complete another assessment with a second rubric provided.
