Description

Help your class develop their reading comprehension with the Collecting Characters Game, where students will combine the skills of questioning and inferring in an easy-to-play game format.

This 2-player game requires students to ask a variety of questions to guess their partner’s mystery book character and collect their Character card. The winner is the player who has collected the most Character cards at the end! This versatile resource includes an instruction page, Character cards, Question Opener cards and Wild Question Opener cards.

Players will select a Character card that they keep hidden from their partner. They will then take turns asking their partner questions about their mystery book character. The Question Opener cards and Wild Question Opener cards help the players to compose meaningful questions. Ensure students understand that they must use all 8 of the yellow Question Opener cards before they are allowed to guess their partner’s character. This gives each player enough time to practise their inference and questioning skills. We recommend allowing students access to writing materials, such as whiteboards or scrap paper, to record important information learned about their partner’s mystery book character.

We have included a variety of characters from popular children’s books on the Character cards; however, we advise that you only include those that your students know well. Adding your own characters to our editable cards is an ideal way for your students to practise their inference skills with familiar texts, such as a class novel, small group texts or even a picture book!

In addition, we have also included editable Wild Question Opener cards for you to cater to the diverse needs of the students in your class.

Please note that each game requires both sets of the yellow Question Opener cards that are labelled Player 1 and Player 2. If you are concerned about your students seeing through the back of the Character or Question cards, we recommend printing them onto thick cardstock before cutting them out or backing them onto coloured card.
