Help your class to develop their comprehension skills with the Connecting to the Heart of the Story Craftivity, which requires students to apply the strategy of making connections. This versatile resource allows students to make text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world connections and can be used in conjunction with a text of your choice or the included text titled ‘Maya’s Story’, a narrative about a young refugee.

You will have the option to distribute the craftivity template or worksheet version of this making connections task!

The craftivity template includes four hearts: one for each type of connection and a cover heart. Students will cut and glue these hearts together, from the largest heart at the back to the smallest at the front. Please note that two versions of the cover heart, Heart 1, have been included: one for ‘Maya’s Story’ and one for a text of your choice.

Two versions of the worksheet option have also been included: one for those using ‘Maya’s Story’ and one for a text of your choice. On this resource, students will write their connections in the layered heart sections. To allow students plenty of room for documenting their ideas, we recommend enlarging your chosen version to A3. Allowing students to use different coloured writing tools for each section or to lightly shade each area in a different colour will ensure this worksheet is as visually appealing as the craftivity option!
