Let’s Steal – Converting Centimetres to Millimetres

You’ve made it to the tomb - now it’s time to steal the treasure! In this exciting conversion-focused Digi-Game, students test their metric measurement knowledge by converting centimetres (cm) to millimetres (mm) with every question they answer correctly.

With each correct conversion, students choose whether to play it safe and secure the treasure they’ve earned, or risk it all to go for a bigger prize. But beware - a wrong answer sends them falling through a trap door, losing their hard-earned treasure in the process!

This high-stakes game is designed to build fluency with metric conversions, deepen understanding of place value and decimals, and create a fun challenge that reinforces real-world maths skills.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Convert lengths from centimetres to millimetres up to 250 cm
  • ✅ Interpret and calculate values including one decimal place
  • ✅ Strengthen knowledge of place value and metric relationships
  • ✅ Practise problem-solving and risk-based decision making
  • ✅ Build confidence through meaningful game-based learning

How to Play:

  1. Students are shown a value in centimetres, including decimals, and asked to convert it to millimetres.
  2. A correct answer earns treasure - the player can then choose to keep it or risk it for the chance at a more valuable reward.
  3. If they get the next question wrong, they lose their unbanked treasure and fall through the trap door.
  4. The game continues through a series of conversions until all questions are complete.
  5. At the end, students see the total treasure value they’ve collected and how well they managed their risk.

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use during units on metric conversions and decimal understanding
  • 💡 Perfect for Years 5 to 6 consolidating conversion skills between cm and mm
  • 💡 Ideal for independent fluency practice, maths rotations or challenge groups
  • 💡 Follow up with physical measuring tasks using rulers and classroom objects

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
  • 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired or group play
  • 💛 Send the QR code home for continued practise converting metric units

Let’s Steal – Converting Centimetres to Millimetres offers an exciting blend of treasure hunting and metric mastery, helping students turn measurement knowledge into gold!
