This Mother’s Day writing activity is a heartwarming way for students to express their love, gratitude and appreciation for their mums or special caregivers. It encourages children to reflect on the positive qualities of their mothers, the lessons they have learned from them and the reasons they are thankful. The activity includes a structured writing template and an optional heart-themed envelope topper to present the final piece beautifully.   How to Complete This resource includes editable text, so you can adjust the template to suit your students’ needs. We have included boy and girl clipart options in blank, 24mm, 18mm and 14mm line widths.  

1. Students complete the structured writing prompts, either with pictures or text.
2. They then have the option to cut out and attach the heart-shaped envelope topper to the top of the writing page to create a stand-out display piece. If printed on white card, we recommend allowing students to paint it or fill the hearts with scrunched tissue paper for a textured effect.

  Additional Tips

1. Print the heart topper templates on coloured cardstock, ready for students to cut and glue.
2. Model the activity by filling out an example letter together as a class.
3. Encourage students to add specific details and examples in their writing.
4. Provide word banks and adjectives to support students as they write.
5. Younger students may benefit from having the templates enlarged to A3 for ample drawing or writing space.

1. Video Message: Students can read their letters aloud and record a special video message.
