Description

You’ve reached the tomb, and it’s time to get the treasure! In this high-stakes grammar game, students answer questions to earn treasure—but there’s a twist! After each correct answer, they must decide whether to bank their treasure or risk it all and play on for a bigger reward.

In this version, students practise identifying and classifying sentences as either direct or indirect speech. Through each scenario, they’ll strengthen their understanding of reporting structures, punctuation rules, and how speech is presented in different contexts. The risk-and-reward format keeps them focused and motivated!

Let’s Steal – Direct & Indirect Speech is ideal for grammar practise in Years 3–6. Use it as a whole-class game on the interactive whiteboard or let students scan the QR code to play independently or in small groups during rotations.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Identify and classify sentences as direct or indirect speech
  • ✅ Recognise punctuation and formatting features of reported speech
  • ✅ Strengthen grammar skills through context-based practise
  • ✅ Develop reasoning when distinguishing sentence types
  • ✅ Engage with grammar in a risk-based, decision-making game format

How to Play:

  1. Students are shown a sentence and must decide whether it’s direct or indirect speech.
  2. Each correct answer unlocks treasure for the player.
  3. After answering, they choose to either bank their treasure or risk it for a larger reward.
  4. If they answer the next question incorrectly, they fall through the trapdoor and lose all unbanked treasure.
  5. The game continues until all questions have been answered. The player with the highest banked total wins!

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use during grammar units focused on speech, punctuation, and sentence types
  • 💡 Great for Year 3–6 students building confidence with reported speech
