Description
Engage young learners in an interactive phonics activity with CVC Word Dig. This hands-on resource helps students develop their phonological awareness, letter-sound recognition, and CVC word spelling skills. Using a magnifying glass, students ‘dig’ for hidden images on bone-shaped cards and record the corresponding CVC words.
How to Complete
Print and cut out the CVC Word Dig Bones and ensure each student has a magnifying glass and a recording mat or sheet. A teacher reference page has also been included.
- Students will take turns selecting a bone card and using a magnifying glass to discover the hidden image.
- Once they have identified the image, students will say the word aloud, focusing on segmenting and blending the sounds.
- They will then write the word on their recording mat or sheet.
- Continue the process until all the bones have been ‘dug up’ and recorded.
Additional Tips
- Place the recording mat in a write-and-wipe sleeve and have students use a dry-erase marker to record their answers.
- Create a fun sensory experience by burying the bone cards in trays filled with sand for students to ‘dig’ up.
- Turn the activity into a game where students race to identify and record the most words in a set time.
Extension Ideas
- Letter Manipulation: Instead of writing the words, have students use magnetic letters or letter tiles to build the words.
- Sentence Building: Challenge students to use their newly discovered CVC words in simple sentences to enhance comprehension.
- Differentiation: Offer pre-written word lists for emerging learners or encourage advanced students to sort words by vowel sounds.
