Description
Our Dotty Easter Eggs task cards provide an engaging way for young learners to develop their subitising skills. This hands-on activity helps students quickly identify matching number representations, reinforcing number recognition and early mathematical fluency in a fun, Easter-themed format.
How to Complete
Print the task cards on thick card for durability and cut out prior to use. In addition to the cards, students will need small items to cover the eggs, such as counters, pom poms, play dough or pegs. To enhance the Easter theming, provide mini Easter eggs or chicks for students to cover the eggs with!
- Students will select a task card featuring an Easter Bunny with a focus number on its belly. They will quickly identify which Easter eggs contain a collection of dots that match the given number.
- Once they find a correct match, they cover it with a small item, such as a counter or an Easter chick.
- Alternatively, students could be tasked with identifying the collection that does not match the focus number on the task card.
Additional Tips
- Encourage students to say the numbers aloud and describe how they recognise the pattern.
- Set a timer for an added challenge, promoting fluency and quick recall.
Extension Ideas
- Advanced Counting: Ask students to count the dots and verbalise different ways to break down the number. For example: That collection has 4 dots because I see 2 here and 2 there.
- Number Comparison: Have students compare two different cards and discuss which has more or fewer dots.
