Our Easter Egg Words activity is a hands-on and engaging way for students to practise blending sounds and recognising word families. By matching two egg halves, students will create words and determine whether they are real or nonsense. This resource reinforces students’ understanding of common blends and word families and is ideal for independent or small group work.

How to Complete

1. Print the Easter Egg Words Cards on thick cardstock for durability (includes blends and word families). Cut out the egg halves in preparation for use.
2. Place the blend cards in one bowl and the word family cards in another. Provide students with an activity mat in a write and wipe sleeve and a dry-erase pen. Alternatively, provide students with a black and white recording sheet.
3. Students will take turns selecting one egg half from each bowl and match them to form a word. They will then say the word aloud and determine whether it is a real or nonsense word. Depending on the selected recording method, students will either write the word under the correct column (real or nonsense) or only record real words with the aim to be the first to find five real words.

Additional Tips

1. Model how to blend the sounds and how to determine if a word is real.
2. Younger students may benefit from the mats being enlarged to A3.

Extension Ideas

1. Create Silly Sentences: Ask students to use their real words in funny sentences to reinforce understanding.
2. Speed Challenge: Set a timer and challenge students to create and record as many real words as possible in a set amount of time.
