Engage young learners with our Easter-themed phonics activity, Eggcellent Words. This hands-on resource helps students develop their phonological awareness, letter-sound recognition and CVC word spelling skills as they use letter tiles to make CVC words. It is ideal for independent or small group work.

How to Complete

Print the activity mats and the CVC picture and letter tiles on thick cardstock. Cut out the tiles and store each CVC word and picture in its own hollow plastic Easter egg. The mats can be placed in write and wipe sleeves for students to write on with a dry-erase pen. Please note that we have also included student recording sheets and reference pages for additional support.

1. Give each child an activity mat and access to a basket (or container) of plastic eggs, each containing a cut-up CVC word and matching picture.
2. Students will ‘crack’ open an egg and use the picture tile to help them work out the CVC word.
3. As students sort the letter tiles on their mat, ensure they practise saying each sound aloud.
4. Once students have successfully made the CVC word, they can either write it on the mat with a dry-erase pen or on a recording sheet. They can then return the tiles to the plastic egg.

Additional Tips

1. If hollow plastic eggs are not available, simply provide students with two or three mixed up sets of CVC tiles at a time to sort.
2. Turn the activity into a game where students race to identify and record the most words in a set time.

Extension Ideas

1. Letter Manipulation: Instead of writing the words, have students use magnetic letters or letter tiles to build the words.
2. Sentence Building: Challenge students to use their newly discovered CVC words in simple sentences to enhance comprehension.
3. Differentiation: Offer pre-written word lists for emerging learners or encourage advanced students to sort words by vowel sounds.
