Description

You’ve made it to the ancient tomb—now it’s time to get the treasure! In this exciting digital game, students use their understanding of chance to earn treasure by identifying which outcomes are equally likely and which are not. But choose carefully—there’s a risk!

Students will answer multiple-choice questions designed to develop their understanding of basic probability. For example, they may be asked: “How many equally likely outcomes are there when rolling a fair six-sided die?” or “Which event is not equally likely to happen?” These questions help build language around chance and reinforce fair vs unfair outcomes.

Each correct answer earns treasure, but students must then decide—bank it, or risk it for the next reward? A wrong answer sends them through the trapdoor, and they lose any unbanked treasure. This adds strategy and engagement to every round!

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Distinguish between equally likely and not equally likely outcomes
  • ✅ Use probability language such as “likely,” “unlikely,” “certain,” and “impossible”
  • ✅ Recognise fairness and chance in familiar real-world contexts
  • ✅ Develop critical thinking and reasoning skills through prediction and comparison
  • ✅ Engage in interactive, risk-based gameplay to reinforce maths vocabulary and concepts

How to Play:

  1. Students are presented with a chance-based scenario and four answer options.
  2. They choose the correct response based on their understanding of probability.
  3. A correct answer earns a piece of treasure.
  4. Students can choose to bank their treasure or risk it and play on for a bigger prize.
  5. If they answer incorrectly, they fall through the trapdoor and lose their unbanked treasure!

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use during chance and data units to introduce or revise probability language
  • 💡 Great for Year 3–4 students building reasoning around fairness and prediction
  • 💡 Pair with hands-on activities using dice, spinners or coins to explore equal likelihood
  • 💡 Follow up with group discussions or reflection on why some outcomes are fair and others are not

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
  • 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired, or group play
  • 💛 Send the QR code home for students to play as a homework or revision task

Let’s Steal – Equally & Not Equally Likely brings probability concepts to life—encouraging learners to reason, predict, and take strategic risks as they hunt for treasure!
