Escape the Room: Representing Numbers Beyond 10 000 Place Value Game

Engage your students in a thrilling escape room adventure that builds place value skills and deepens understanding of numbers beyond 10 000.
With this resource, students have the opportunity to recognise and represent large numbers in multiple ways as they play. Ideal for individual, partner or small group work, this activity uses secret code words to escape the room and makes mastering place value and multi-digit numbers fun and memorable. Students will find cards that have been hidden around the classroom, read the number and represent it in multiple ways. To support students in this, we have included abacus and place value chart templates. When students are able to represent a number in multiple ways, it demonstrates they have a thorough understanding of place value. Please note that students will benefit from practise with this concept prior to playing the game. For example, the number 4 614 840 could be represented as:
- 4 millions, 614 thousands, 84 tens
- 4 millions, 61 484 tens
- 4 614 thousands, 840 ones (and so on).
