Description

This world map resource is a visual and interactive way to celebrate cultural diversity, inclusivity, and belonging and is ideal to complete during Harmony Day celebrations.

Through completing this resource, your students will have the opportunity to explore connections they and their families or friends have with different places around the world. This activity helps develop geographical knowledge, cultural understanding, and a sense of belonging.

How to Complete:

  1. Discuss the concept of Harmony Day, emphasising its message of inclusion and belonging.
  2. Have students identify places around the world they have connections to (this could include where they, their family members or friends were born, or places they have travelled to).
  3. Have students mark locations on the map using coloured dots or stickers, drawn symbols or flags, or by writing names.
  4. Encourage discussion about different cultures, traditions, and experiences related to the places marked on the map.
  5. Create a display of completed maps to celebrate the diverse backgrounds of students by hanging them around or under one of our Harmony Day banners.

Additional Tips:

  1. Encourage students to discuss their connections with places around the world their families prior to completing the activity.
  2. Use a globe to help students locate their countries accurately.
  3. Allow students to colour the map in a way that represents their heritage or personal connections to different places.
  4. Enlarge the worksheet to A3 size to allow additional working space.

Extension Ideas:

  1. Map Display: Create a collaborative class version of the worksheet where each student contributes their country of origin, forming a visual representation of classroom diversity. Alternatively, use one of our Everyone Belongs World Map Posters.
  2. Cultural Storytelling: Have students write or draw about their family’s traditions, favourite foods, or languages spoken at home.
  3. Family Involvement: Encourage students to ask their families about their heritage and share new facts with the class. Alternatively, invite students’ family members to come into the classroom to complete the task with them.

Incorporate this Harmony Day worksheet to create an inclusive, engaging, and educational experience that fosters respect, understanding, and celebration of diversity in the classroom.
