Description

Help students make sense of place value with our Expanded Form Look & Write PowerPoint. This interactive activity supports learners in recognising how numbers are built by combining hundreds, tens and ones - a key skill for understanding number structure and value.

Each slide presents a number in expanded form. Students read the expression (e.g. 300 + 40 + 2), then write the matching numeral using a whiteboard, paper or book. The next slide reveals the correct answer, allowing students to check their thinking and refine their strategies.

Expanded Form Look & Write PowerPoint is ideal for warm-ups, small group instruction, or whole-class modelling during your place value unit.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Read and interpret numbers written in expanded form
  • ✅ Convert expanded form to standard numerals
  • ✅ Strengthen understanding of place value and number composition

  • Interactive PowerPoint with 20 expanded form slides
  • Each sequence follows the LOOK - WRITE - CHECK format
  • WRITE slides can be removed to run the activity orally

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use during your place value unit as a warm-up or review task
  • 💡 Include in maths rotations for independent or small group practise
  • 💡 Pair with base ten blocks or place value charts for hands-on support
  • 💡 Use orally with partners or small groups by removing the WRITE slide
  • 💡 Extend by asking students to write the expanded form for the answer as well

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Use small whiteboards so students can quickly record and adjust their answers
  • 💛 Reinforce the place value vocabulary (hundreds, tens, ones) throughout the activity
