This fun percentage game has students strategically fill a ten-by-ten grid with varying amounts aiming to be the first to fill 100% of the grid.

Students spin a spinner which reveals a percentage of the grid they must fill with coloured gems. Gems must be placed in square or rectangle formations. They must be careful where and how they place the gems because if they can’t fit them in the grid they will lose a shovel and miss a turn.

This game has multiple spinners to help with differentiation:

• percentages – the spinner has percentages which students can interpret one-to-one based on their ten-by-ten grid.
• decimals – the decimal spinner requires students to make the connection between the decimal and how it corresponds with the percentage of the grid.
• fractions – students will need to convert fractions to equivalent percentages including; 1/20, 1/25 and 1/50.

This activity can be used as a small groups rotation or partner activity during independent work time. Students can keep their grid pages as a record of their understanding of percentages within a ten-by-ten grid.
