Description

This Science of Reading resource is a wonderful tool to help you teach decodable high-frequency words to students. These words have been placed into categories so as you explicitly teach grapheme-phoneme correspondences you will be able to provide students with opportunities to consolidate their understanding by playing fun, engaging games. These words are called Flash Words. They are similar to Heart Words in that they are words that students will frequently read. They differ because many Flash Words have temporary ‘tricky parts’ which follow regular spelling patterns. This means that as students learn more about the relationship between graphemes and phonemes, they will be able to decode these words. It is important that students know how to read and spell these words in a flash as they will come across these words many times while reading and writing. Digraphs and split digraphs are in bold text to help students. Three quick activity ideas have been included to help you. We also have an editable version in case you would like to change or add words to suit your setting.
