Our Fox: Discovering Different Definitions resource is based on the picture book, Fox by Australian author Margaret Wild. It allows students to demonstrate their understanding of how words can have a literal or implied meaning. The science of reading has proven that teaching semantics concepts, such as the meanings of words in different contexts, helps improve students’ reading and writing.

To complete this task, students will consider the different meanings of words from the text, including dictionary definitions and emotional definitions that are based on the experiences of characters as well as themselves. For example, the literal meaning of the word flying is to move through the air; however, for the character Magpie, it represents joy and freedom, and for some people, it can represent fear.
