Description

Our Fox: Sequencing Shades of Meaning resource is based on the picture book, Fox by Australian author Margaret Wild. It allows students to demonstrate their understanding of synonyms. The science of reading has proven that teaching semantics concepts, such as shades of meaning, helps improve students’ reading and writing.

To complete this task, students need to locate synonyms of words from the text and order them by their intensity, from least powerful to most powerful.

To cater for the various needs of your class, we have included three versions of this resource:

  • Version 1 requires students to create and order lists of synonyms from the text.
  • Version 2 requires students to locate and suggest synonyms for words from the text and order them from least powerful to most powerful.
  • Version 3 requires students to locate and suggest synonyms for words from the text, order them from least powerful to most powerful and identify a synonym that could not be substituted in the example sentence.
We recommend that you use this resource in conjunction with our Fox: Selecting Shades of Meaning task and our PowerPoint presentation based on the picture book, Fox.
