Geography Year 5 UNIT PLAN
Description
Stuck on where to start preparing to teach Year 5 Geography? Our Influencing and Managing Places Unit is exactly what you need to get started!
This 12-lesson unit takes students through an inquiry process to identify different ways humans influence and manage the land, including their management of severe weather events. They will describe the positive and negative impacts of urban development, mining and the First Nations Australians’ practice of firestick farming (AC9HS5K04). Students will also recognise that while humans cannot always prevent severe weather events, such as bushfires and floods, they can implement strategies to mitigate their effects (AC9HS5K05).
During the inquiry process, students will develop questions and conduct research by locating, collecting and organising information and data in various ways from different sources. They evaluate information and data in different formats to identify patterns and infer relationships. They analyse information and data to develop evidence-based conclusions. They propose actions or responses to issues. Students use ideas, findings and viewpoints from sources to present descriptions and explanations.
The unit pack comes in a downloadable zip folder and contains the following resources:
- Unit Guide: includes a scope and sequence, unit overview, lesson plans with associated worksheets, assessment rubrics, peer feedback and self-reflection templates, suggested resources and tiered vocabulary lists.
- PowerPoint: for use with specific lessons providing topical information while modelling the inquiry process through the curious Alando the alien and inexperienced Mayor Weatherly.
- Displays: definition posters for urban development, mining, firestick farming, bushfires, floods, land zoning, a town map, newspaper article, word wall cards and a unit banner.
