Description

This game is an engaging way for children to develop their oral language skills, particularly descriptive language and developing vocabulary. It also helps to develop social skills such as turn-taking and sharing. This resource includes a set of 64 cards with ‘under the sea’ themed items of different shape, size, and quantity. It encourages children to use and develop their descriptive language skills and to think critically about the features of the items depicted on the cards. It is perfect to help develop the following skills:
  1. Language Development: Students are encouraged to use descriptive language to ask questions and describe items on the cards. This can include using adjectives to describe the size, colour, shape, and other characteristics of the picture.
  2. Listening Skills: They will actively listen to their peers as they describe the pictures on their cards.
  3. Turn-Taking and Collaboration: The game encourages students to take turns, share ideas and work together.
  4. Cognitive Development: The game requires them to use critical thinking skills to ask the right questions and make informed guesses about which cards their peers might have.
  5. Vocabulary Development: As they take turns describing their pictures, they are exposed to new words and concepts. They may also use descriptive words to help their peers understand the picture.
  6. Following Instructions: Students follow the instructions of the game to play.
These oral language skills support the development of several outcomes in the Early Years Learning Framework, including:
  • Listening and responding to others
  • Expressing ideas and thoughts using language and other modes of communication
  • Developing effective communication skills for different purposes and contexts
  • Using language to learn and communicate with others in social situations.
