Description

Work together to build and protect a town that is under attack by giant robots. Students earn actions by answering questions correctly—will they choose to upgrade homes and grow the population, strengthen the town walls, or launch an attack to weaken the robots?

In this version, students analyse and interpret a variety of graphical representations of data. They’ll read bar graphs, pictographs, and tables to answer questions, compare values, and make inferences. This activity builds confidence in data literacy and supports students’ ability to extract meaning from visual information.

Let’s Defend – Graphical Representation of Data is a great way to integrate data analysis into maths rotations, small group work, or whole-class review. Students can work together to protect the town or play independently using the QR code.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Read and interpret bar graphs, pictographs, and tables
  • ✅ Compare data values and draw conclusions from visual representations
  • ✅ Identify key elements in graphs, including titles, labels, and scales
  • ✅ Develop critical thinking and data reasoning skills
  • ✅ Engage in strategic, cooperative gameplay to reinforce data skills

How to Play:

  1. Students are shown a graph or data display and answer a multiple choice question about it.
  2. Each correct answer earns an action: build homes, reinforce walls, or attack the robots.
  3. Incorrect answers do not earn a town action.
  4. The game continues until all questions are answered and the town is fully protected.
  5. Students work as a team to maximise town development and survive the robot attack!

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Use during your data representation unit to reinforce reading graphs and interpreting information
  • 💡 Great for Year 3–6 students practising comparison and interpretation skills
  • 💡 Add to maths rotations for collaborative problem-solving
  • 💡 Follow up with a hands-on task where students create their own pictographs or bar charts

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
  • 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired, or group play
  • 💛 Send the QR code home for students to play as a homework or revision task

Let’s Defend – Graphical Representation of Data makes interpreting graphs and analysing data a high-stakes team mission—where maths meets strategy and engagement!
