This Science of Reading inspired resource is the perfect tool to teach ‘heart words’ or high-frequency words to students as a way to improve their reading and spelling.The resource will help develop your students’ ability to examine words and recognise the relationship between phonemes and graphemes. It will assist students in identifying the parts of a word that are irregular so that they can learn them by heart. This will help developing readers become more confident as it takes out the guesswork by highlighting the ‘tricky parts’ in words.Teachers may like to introduce a small handful of heart words each week. Students can say the word out loud and then identify the graphemes that match the phoneme. Teachers can then identify the part of the word that is considered tricky.
