History Assessment Year 3: Unique Communities Postcard
Description
Support your Year 3 students in their learning of HASS: History, with the Unique Communities Postcard Assessment task.
Created to coincide with Year 3 History Australian Curriculum, this activity will provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the significant events, symbols and emblems that are important to Australia’s identity and diversity.
It is recommended that students are allocated different state or territories to research. They can use sources, such as books and websites to locate information about their state or territory, including its symbols and emblems, history, events that are celebrated or commemorated and what makes it a unique place. They will use the Unique Communities Postcard Research worksheets to record their findings. Blank and lined versions of these worksheets have been included.
Students will share their research in the form of a postcard, using the Greetings From… postcard worksheets. They will write their postcard from the perspective of a student who has moved to a new state or territory and is writing to a friend back home. Their postcard letter will include information about what makes their new state or territory unique, historical facts and descriptions of three events that are celebrated or commemorated by people who live there (these can include events that are specific to their state or territory e.g. Western Australia = Foundation Day or Victoria = Melbourne Cup Day, Australia-wide events e.g. ANZAC Day or religious events e.g. Christmas or Ramadan). On the postcard cover, students will include the name of the state or territory and images of its emblems, symbols and other relevant landmarks. They are encouraged to caption each image or add a brief description. Multiple versions of these templates, including blank and lined versions, have been included.
Teachers can assess this task using the Unique Communities Postcard Assessment Rubric. A blank version of this document has also been included.
This activity is part of our Communities Past and Present History Unit.
