Our Year 5 History Unit Plan on Australian Colonies is your one-stop shop!

This 8-lesson unit explores the events in Australia through the 1800s focusing on the reasons why Britain expanded, how the colonies changed over time, the different perspectives of colonial life and significant individuals of the colonies. This is all taught through unique hands-on activities, mapping templates, persuasive flyers and mock news updates.

The unit plan package downloads as a zip file and contains the following resources:

Unit Guide: includes a scope and sequence, unit overview, lesson plans with associated resources, assessments, rubrics, self-reflection templates, suggested resources and tiered vocabulary lists.
PowerPoint: provides supplementary information for each lesson including an animated map showing how the colonies changed over time.
Displays: a unit banner, a timeline from 1780 to 1900 and word wall cards.

Two assessment tasks are included in this unit. The first involves students creating a persuasive flyer that either encourages or discourages people to join the colonies using researched facts and persuasive techniques. The second assessment has students research and present a biography on a significant individual of the colonies in the style of a news report’s feature story. Instructions, checklists and rubrics for both assessments are included.
