Are you looking for a fun way to reinforce addition skills to 10 or 20? Our Hit the Target game is the resource for you! This activity is ideal to completed after reading the picture book, One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab by April Pulley Sayre and Jeff Sayre.

The aim of the game is for students to flip a target number card and try to reach it by adding a collection of ‘feet’ number cards. To make the game more challenging, students are not allowed to exceed their target number! Depending on the needs of your class, provide students with an addition to 10 or 20 board. These boards feature a handy number line to assist students in their addition calculations.

Prior to completing the activity, ensure that students are familiar with the included images and their number of feet:

1. Snail = 1 foot
2. Person = 2 feet
3. Dog = 4 feet
4. Insect = 6 feet
5. Spider = 8 feet
6. Crab = 10 feet

This game is suitable for individual work in Foundation to Year 2 and would make a great addition to small group rotations or table activities. This resource includes detailed instructions, addition to 10 and 20 game boards (in high and low colour options), target number cards, feet cards and optional recording sheets.

In addition to the printable templates, students may require manipulatives to assist them in using the number lines, such as paper clips. Alternatively, place the boards in write and wipe sleeves so students can annotate them with whiteboard markers.
