Description

Support your students in developing report-writing skills with our interactive Information Collector: Animal Information Report Game! Designed to reinforce the structure and content of information reports, this engaging board game encourages students to collect facts under specific subheadings while reading, writing and collaborating with their peers.

Each student is assigned an animal and moves around the game board, collecting matching fact cards. As they read each card, they record the information under the appropriate subheading on their worksheet. The visual nature of the subheading strip helps guide students in categorising facts correctly, building their understanding of how to structure informative writing in a purposeful way.

Information Collector is ideal for small group work during literacy centres, writing rotations, or guided instruction. With multiple animal options and low-colour versions included, this versatile resource supports both differentiated instruction and repeated use across the classroom. Students will love the game format, and teachers will love the purposeful literacy practise it provides!

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • ✅ Identify and categorise factual information under subheadings
  • ✅ Develop note-taking and summarising skills
  • ✅ Understand the structure and purpose of an information report
  • ✅ Strengthen reading comprehension through fact retrieval
  • ✅ Build oral language and collaboration through peer interaction

What’s Included:

  • Game board (low and full colour versions)
  • Animal fact cards for each game set
  • My Information Collection strips with six subheadings
  • Recording sheets for writing collected facts
  • Instructions for gameplay and setup

Materials Needed:

  • Printed game board and components (preferably on card)
  • Dice and player counters
  • Pencils or pens for writing
  • Zip-lock bags or small tubs to store each game set
  • A3 printer (optional, for enlarging materials)

How to Use:

  1. Assign an animal to each student and provide them with a matching strip and recording sheet.
  2. Place the game board in the centre and give each player six counters and a pile of fact cards.
  3. Students take turns rolling the die and moving around the board.
  4. When they land on their animal, they read a fact card and write the information under the correct subheading.
  5. They place a counter on that subheading and continue until all six are collected. The first to finish wins!

Ideas for Classroom Use:

  • 💡 Follow up with a full written report using the collected facts
  • 💡 Encourage oral presentations to develop public speaking skills
  • 💡 Integrate into an animal-themed inquiry unit or science topic

Top Teacher Tips:

  • 💛 Print the game board and fact cards on thick cardstock for durability
  • 💛 Enlarge the materials to A3 for easier handling, especially for younger students
  • 💛 Store all components in labelled zip-lock bags for quick setup
  • 💛 Use the low colour version when printing multiple copies to save ink
  • 💛 Model categorising information before gameplay to support understanding
