Description
Visit the robot factory where you will mix and match various body parts to build a robot. Each correct answer unlocks a new piece—bringing students closer to completing their own unique robot creation!
In this version, students are shown a variety of 2D shapes and asked to identify them based on the number of sides and/or corners (vertices). By focusing on the key features of each shape, students strengthen their understanding of geometry while developing important vocabulary and visual recognition skills.
Let’s Build – Knowing the Features of 2D Shapes is ideal for Foundation to Year 2 students learning about shape properties. Use it during your geometry unit, as part of a warm-up, or for independent play using the QR code to make early maths learning fun and hands-on.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- ✅ Identify 2D shapes based on their number of sides and corners
- ✅ Recognise and name a variety of common 2D shapes
- ✅ Build geometry vocabulary including terms like sides, corners, and vertices
- ✅ Develop visual reasoning and classification skills
- ✅ Engage in interactive learning through shape-based robot construction
How to Play:
- Students are shown a 2D shape and asked to answer a question about its features (e.g. number of sides or corners).
- Each correct answer unlocks a new robot part for their creation.
- The robot is assembled one piece at a time with each correct response.
- The game continues until the robot is fully built.
- At the end, students see their completed robot celebrate their success!
Ideas for Classroom Use:
- 💡 Use during Foundation–Year 2 geometry lessons focused on shape properties
- 💡 Pair with a hands-on shape-sorting or labelling activity to reinforce learning
- 💡 Add to rotations or use as a follow-up after an explicit shape feature mini-lesson
- 💡 Follow up with a drawing activity where students design shapes and label features
Top Teacher Tips:
- 💛 Let students personalise their experience by choosing from six characters before the game begins
- 💛 Select the number of players or teams at the start of the game to suit individual, paired, or group play
- 💛 Send the QR code home for students to play as a homework or revision task
Let’s Build – Knowing the Features of 2D Shapes gives students a playful, visual way to explore shape properties—building maths confidence while constructing their own robot masterpiece!
