This purposeful activity has been designed to accompany a whole class reading of the picture book Koala Lou by Mem Fox. Gum Tree Climbing is a fun way for your students to comprehend parts of the story as they race to the top of the gum tree, just like Koala Lou!

Starting at the base of the tree, students will take turns rolling the die and move the corresponding number of spaces up the game board. If they land on a hat, they will pick up a comprehension card which features a question based on elements of the story. If they land on a stopwatch, they will pick up a chance card and follow the directions. The first player to reach Mother Koala is the winner!

Students may benefit from having this resource enlarged to A3. We recommend printing the boards and cards on thick card. Players will need a playing piece each (such as a counter) and a die to share with their partner.
